  • Do the Harlem Shake - Weekly Recap

Posted on February 21, 2014 by Chris Ballinger

This week's Recap got a little crazy--but I thin, in a good way. Thanks for all of your questions and don't forget to get involved in that video competition! I promise the prize will be amazeballz!

Let's talk about the tricks that were recommended in the Recap: First I talked about the Ambitious Card. A great place to learn that trick is the Royal Road to Card Magic. That's a fantastic book and if you do card magic at all, you should own it. Seriously. I also talked about those cute little Sponge Bunnies, 'Fraid Knot, Ransom, and Unshuffled. (Little pro tip from Chris: if you get Unshuffled and need more help with it, the Perfect Faro Shuffle Instant Download is a fantastic reference.)

Later in the video I talked about a few tricks that are easy to carry around in your pocket. Here are a few good suggestions: Innercircle by Yigal Mesika, Coin in Bottle, and the Linking Mints.

This week's featured trick was Cameron Francis' Nothing But the Truth. This is a fantastic packet effect with a lot of audience interaction. If you want to learn more about it and check out the Magic Geek Street Demo video, simply click HERE.

Lastly, I want to remind you one more time to make a YouTube video of yourself performing one of my tricks and copy the link to that video into the comments section of the Weekly Recap. You're playing for a really cool surprise, so good luck!

  • Flying for Valentine's Day - Weekly Recap

Posted on February 14, 2014 by Chris Ballinger

This wee you asked questions about levitations and so on. Thanks for taking ten minutes of your Valentine's Day to listen to my answers:

Throughout the video I talk about various levitation gimmicks. The DOS System, Loops and the Thread Genii were featured the most throughout. If you are a beginner looking to get into levitation, definitely get the Floating Dollar Bill and/or the Hummingbird Card to start out. Those tricks will get you acquainted with the methods used and give you more confidence before jumping into the advanced stuff.

I spent quite a bit of time talking about Yigal Mesika's Innercircle which is a fantastic set and I highly recommend getting yourself one. This comes with a pack of Loops, an E-book called Animated Miracles and the very cool Innercircle Card which will carry and protect your Loops until you're ready to use them. This changed the way I look at and treat my Loops and I think it will do the same for you.

And finally, the last bit of business which I think is the most exciting: the Video competition. Just shoot a video of you performing your favorite Chris Ballinger trick and we will pick a few for the final voting round next week. The winner will get a very cool surprise from me, Chris Ballinger.

  • I Never Mess Up Ever - Weekly Recap

Posted on February 7, 2014 by Chris Ballinger

This week I asked you for tricks that you were having trouble routining or writing patter for. I got some great requests for routines as well as some very deep questions like "What is your favorite food?" That's what I love about the Weekly Recap, you never know what's going to happen!

The first question was about the Ambitious Card. If you don't know what this is or want to make your Ambitious Card Routine better, I highly recommend that you check out Darryl's Ambitious Card DVD.

We also talked about the 3-D Sponge Rabbits which is one of my favorite close-up effects to perform. 444rr wanted to know how to incorporate the Jumbo Sponge Rabbit into his routine and I hope you all enjoy the little move that I covered to make that possible.

We also talked about routining for the trick Surprising Dots which has also been called "Hoppin Spots" and "What's Next" over the years. This is a fantastic trick because it packs flat, plays big, creates interest and has a surprise ending.

In case you couldn't tell by watching the Weekly Recap, I was really impressed with Garrett Thomas' Imagination Coins. I think it's smart, bold and impressive magic that happens in the spectator's hands. Check out the new Street Demo we did on the Imagination Coins to see how real people react to this great effect.

We also got a question on the trick Perfect PENetration. This is a classic example of a great, visual trick that can be taken to the next level with proper routining. I always recommend analyzing your patter even if the trick starts off strong or easy to perform.

Wow, we talked about a lot of tricks today! I touched on my go-to trick for hecklers: Unshuffled by Paul Gertner. This is a fantastic routine, but it does take a lot of practice. The Instant Download on the Perfect Faro Shuffle complements this DVD and can really help you master the routine a lot quicker.

Don't forget to place an order and get your copy of the Geeky Times. I'm really looking forward to reading your entrys to the Cartoon Caption COntest. The winner will get published in the next issue of the Geeky Time AND get a $25 Gift Certificate. So get those submissions in ASAP.

And finally, I talked about a few tricks that you can use as fail-safes. The ones I listed were Floating Match on Card, Phil Trick by Trevor Duffy, Bite Out Quarter, and Perfect PENetration. These are just a few examples, you can use whatever trick you are the most comfortable with. Just save that trick for the end of your routine or when you need some saving.

  • Can't Control Your Audience - Weekly Recap

Posted on January 31, 2014 by Chris Ballinger

This week's topic was "Improvisation" but a lot of the questions were about how to control your audiences. That's a fun topic because there is a fine line between having authority over your audience and being an overbearing performer. The best way to handle a tough crowd: improvisation. Binging it back full circle! Boom!

In this week's recap We also talked about a silly youtube video that I did a few years back on magic for Valentine's day. Here it is, if you want to watch it.

If you are looking for the magic covered in "Derrick's Romance Tips", I'll list them out for your. Click on the name of the trick to learn more about it: Twilight Angels, 3-D Sponge Rabbits, Ring Thing, Anniversary Waltz, and Kevin James' Floating Rose.

We also talked about Senses by Christopher Wiehl; which is a fantastic set of magic that you can do with a ketchup cup. A lot of solid, usable routines are covered in the included 2-hour DVD. Check it out:

Also mentioned in this week's Recap: Torn 2 Pieces and Ransom. Both effects are great tricks that fit right into your wallet and can be performed anywhere, anytime!

And don't forget to enter into the drawing for the collector's set of Zodiac cards and get a discount on your order here at Magic Geek. That offer ends on Friday, February 7th.
